Business Briefing: the ‘get rich quick scheme’ influencing what you buy

Image
It sounds like a get rich quick scheme. Amass huge numbers of followers on a social media platform like Instagram and you can get paid like a celebrity to mention or feature products in your posts. But this  industry of “online influencers” was worth  US$500 million in 2015, and is expected to grow to be worth US$5 billion by 2020, according to Sandra Peter from the University of Sydney. There’s a well documented business model behind it. Even though these online influencers might not be overtly endorsing a product, advertisers will still pay a lot to have something featured, even subtly, in their posts. The relationship online influencers form with their followers is different to a regular celebrity because they have more leeway to talk about their own experiences. When the influencer industry was at it’s peak, about five years ago, the content was more about using your body or life to sell something, says Crystal Abidin from Curtin University. But this is now changi...

Why is Australian 15-year-olds’ financial literacy declining?

Image
Around a fifth of 15-year-olds in Australia do not have basic financial literacy, according to a new OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA)  financial literacy assessment results  report. Financial literacy is defined by the OECD as: Knowledge and understanding of financial concepts, and the skills, motivation and confidence to apply such knowledge and understanding in order to make effective decisions across a range of financial contexts, to improve the financial wellbeing of individuals and society, and to enable participation in economic life. This topic has an elevated status in the  Australian curriculum , particularly within maths and humanities. However, the report showed that young people are doing worse in this area now than previously. In particular, students struggled to read payslips and detect financial scams. Low socioeconomic background, attending a rural and remote school, and Indigeneity influenced students’ financial li...

At least 65 victims are set to confront Nassar, 54, in court this week in the last of three sentencing hearings, prosecutors say. He was sentenced last week to 40 to 175 years in prison after nearly 160 women testified that he had molested them. His victims included Olympic gold medal winners Aly Raisman and Jordyn Wieber. Nassar is already serving 60 years in prison for possession of child sex abuse images . In the current hearing, the court is sitting to sentence him for molesting patients in the back room of Twistars gymnastics club in Dimondale, Michigan. The former Michigan State University (MSU) physician pleaded guilty in November to three counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct against girls for whom he was supposed to be providing medical care. At least one of the sexual assaults included a victim younger than 13. Two of the victims were abused at 15 or 16 years old. On Wednesday Judge Janice Cunningham told the small court in Charlotte, Michigan: ...

Three of Kenya's biggest television stations remain off-air until further notice

Image
Three of Kenya's biggest television stations will remain off-air until further notice because they had planned to broadcast the opposition leader's unofficial "inauguration" in Nairobi. Interior Minister Fred Matiang'i told reporters they would stay closed until investigations were complete. Shortly after he spoke, opposition MP Tom Kajwang was arrested. Mr Kajwang played a prominent role in Tuesday's  ceremony naming Raila Odinga as "the people's president" . The outspoken MP had donned a lawyer's robe and wig, to the amusement of thousands of cheering opposition supporters in Uhuru park, in the capital Nairobi. The Interior Ministry said in a statement circulating on social media that broadcasting the event - described as an attempt to "subvert or overthrow" the government - "would have led to the deaths of thousands of innocent Kenyans". As a result, NTV, KTN and Citizen TV were taken off-air at around 09...
